Biomedical Devices

Insight provides a range of consulting and training services for designing, conducting and analyzing studies involving biomedical devices.

A biomedical device can be defined as any instrument, apparatus, implement, machine, appliance, implant, reagent for in vitro use, software, material or other similar or related article, intended by the manufacturer to be used, alone or in combination for a medical purpose.

There are a number of questions about the way that biomedical devices can be used in health and in health research including:

  • Devices as treatment - Does the device provide a patient benefit? What type of benefit, and for whom?

  • Devices for data collection - What is the accuracy of such data? Can this data be used to form a diagnosis and/or a prognosis for a patient?

  • Devices and operating characteristics - Biomedical devices typically have a number of different ways that they can be used (including electonic settings, and the nature of the physical interaction between the device and the patient). What are the best operating characteristics for different patients and purposes?

  • Devices and safety - Is it safe to use such devices? What type of health risks are introduced by the use of the device?

One particular challenge with biomedical devices is that they typically provide the original information in a fairly complex and unique format, and specialized and advanced mathematical techniques are required to obtain optimal information from such devices.

Insight provides a range of services for designing, conducting and analyzing studies involving biomedical devices. Insight also has a Division (Insights in Engineering Data) that specializes in the mathematical techniques for obtaining information from the complex datasets found in the science and engineering field (including datasets produced by biomedical devices).

Insight is based at the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct. The Precinct contains Griffith University Gold Coast, the Gold Coast University Hospital, the Gold Coast Private Hospital, and the Cohort and Lumina tech parks. Insight provides research, consulting, training, and IT support services for clients across the Precinct and for the broader international community.
